The airbag is commonly used in motorcycle racing, but the technology has become more interesting to private motorcyclists due its increasing affordability.
Motorcycle protective gear is already very effective at distributing the effects of an accident. The cervical spine and the ribcage, however, are critical areas of damage that can be further protected by an airbag.
The airbag is triggered by a zip on the motorcycle or by radio when an accident is detected. Depending on the circumstance, it can release in 200ms to less than 100ms. The D-Air Street shown above, for example, opens at 45ms for the frontal collision, but the release time is automatically extended in other accident scenarios in order to provide maximum protection during impact.
